Support the Troops’ gets new meaning:
Servicemen voice their
needs and volunteers satisfy them.
Orlando, Florida - Many of the comforts and conveniences we take for granted are not available to our troops. Although American servicemen are the best equipped military organization, there are simple personal items that would help ease the daily tensions in a war zone.
The Volunteers for Servicemen and Veterans [VSV] was created to provide citizens
a way to help satisfy those needs. The most popular request is for a Sno-Cone
machine. The troops want them for relief from the Iraqi desert heat. Microwave
ovens, the latest DVD movie releases, Handi-Wipes and other personal hygiene
supplies are also needed. See: www.vsvusa.org (or call: 407-376-9500)
Founder, Dan Cetrone is launching a year long campaign to ‘Support Our Troops’
by providing these personal comforts and conveniences.
“The troops have volunteered to put their lives on the line, every day,” Cetrone
says. “Now, it’s our turn to volunteer. A chance to show our support, by giving
them a little comfort in an uncomfortable environment. Especially during the
holiday season, when thoughts of home and family are the strongest. But, VSV
is an ongoing all year project.”
The VSV provides opportunities for everyone to participate, Cetrone explained.
Volunteers can work at collection points, or pack the items for shipping to the
troops.
There’s also the needs of veterans at home in local VA hospitals. Volunteers
can help with pizza parties and other events.
Corporate sponsors can donate products or money, Cetrone says. Even parents with
servicemen or women on duty can contact them to find out what they need or want.
The responses can be forwarded to the VSV for fulfillment, at no charge.
The VSV is working nationwide to coordinate local churches, schools and other
organizations. In Central Florida, the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) is already
participating in events at the VA hospitals and is handling the shipping to the
servicemen.
School classes and churches can sponsor a company of soldiers and help supply
their needs.
There will be a Walk-A-Thon for school children in January. Concerts with major
singers and groups are being planned for the spring. Any organization or company
interested in participating can contact the VSV at 407-376-9500 or go to the
website at: www.vsvusa.org
